Ice storm leaves widespread power outages

99 percent of Magoffin, Lawrence counties left in the dark

It is a cold and dark morning for nearly 150,000 Kentuckians who are waiting for power to be restored to their homes, after freezing rain blanketed much of central and Eastern Kentucky with a thick sheet of ice.

One-third of Kentucky Power’s customers and 60 percent of Big Sandy RECC’s are currently without power.

Especially hard-hit is Magoffin County, where 99 percent of Kentucky Power customers currently do not have power. Only 17 Kentucky Power customers in the entire county currently have electricity. Statistics were not available for Licking Valley RECC.

Likewise, Lawrence County is also experiencing a blackout covering 99 percent of the county. Of the 8,300 homes and businesses in Lawrence County receiving service from either Kentucky Power or Big Sandy, only 110 currently have power.

Other areas heavily affected by the storm include Johnson and Magoffin counties, where outages affect two out of every three customers.
