WHITESBURG, Ky. — Zara, the new police dog for the Letcher County Sheriff’s Office, has only been on the job for a few days, but she’s already making an impact.

Monday afternoon, she helped police recover nearly 2 oz. of meth.

The sheriff’s office and Kentucky State Police were conducting a roadblock, when Jimmy Cook, 41, of Whitesburg, came through without a license, insurance or a plate. However, Cook would not give police permission to search his motorcycle’s saddle bags.

But when Zara alerted on the right saddle bag, that gave officers all the reason they needed to search and find 50 grams of meth.

Cook was arrested and charged with meth trafficking, possession of drug paraphernalia and a host of traffic violations.
