SALYERSVILLE, Ky. — Two Louisville residents ended up spending Christmas in an Eastern Kentucky jail, after a traffic stop for speeding turned into a drug investigation.
According to the police report, Destany Defenbaugh, 23, was pulled over by a Magoffin County deputy for driving 77 mph through the “Restaurant Row” area, which has a speed limit of 45 mph.
When he stepped to the window to talk to her, the deputy detected marijuana smoke, so he began to investigate further. When he asked her if she had anything illegal on her, Defenbaugh allegedly produced two bags of marijuana and a bag of meth.
A bag containing 28 grams of meth and a set of digital scales were also found in a bookbag belonging to her passenger, 55-year-old Kenneth Downes.
Downes was arrested and charged with meth trafficking and possession of drug paraphernalia. Defenbaugh was arrested and charged with possession of meth, marijuana and drug paraphernalia, in addition to traffic violations.
Both remain in the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center.
