PIKEVILLE, Ky. — A Greenup County man is in jail after allegedly leading police on a chase through two counties at speeds well over 100 miles an hour.
Just after midnight on Sunday, Ashland Police contacted Kentucky State Police Post 9 in Pikeville to inform them that they had used OnStar to track a stolen vehicle to the Cardinal Country Store on U.S. 23 in Floyd County. A state trooper went to the scene, spotted the vehicle and turned on his blue lights, telling the driver — identified as 30-year-old Kurtis Carter — to step out. Instead, the vehicle sped south onto U.S. 23, reaching speeds of up to 118 miles an hour and narrowly missing other vehicles on the road.
Once in Coal Run, the vehicle slowed to 108 miles an hour and police used stop sticks to puncture three of the vehicle’s tires. Regardless, the vehicle continued into Pikeville, where it became disabled on Cassidy Boulevard and Carter allegedly fled on foot. He was found minutes later behind Gatti’s Pizza and arrested.
Inside the vehicle, police reportedly found other stolen items, including four cell phones, a Virginia woman’s wallet, five sets of car keys and an angle grinder.
Carter is now charged with fleeing police, wanton endangerment, receiving stolen property and numerous traffic violations.
