PIKEVILLE, Ky. — A Pike County man is charged with attempted murder of a police officer, following a shootout Sunday morning.
Kentucky State Police received a call just after 8 a.m., from a woman reporting that her ex-boyfriend — Cory Whitehead, 33 — was threatening to harm himself and his father.
When a state trooper went to Whitehead’s Winn’s Branch home, he met Whitehead’s father outside and the two went inside. When Whitehead saw the officer, he allegedly retrieved a gun. After allegedly ignoring commands to drop the weapon, an exchange of gunfire occurred and Whitehead was shot in the hand.
After being treated at Pikeville Medical Center, Whitehead was jailed and charged with attempted murder of a police officer and felon in possession of a firearm.
