

COAL RUN VILLAGE, Ky. — The city of Coal Run paid tribute to the son of a city commissioner who died over the weekend.
Joe Steele, 26, son of Commissioner Mike Steele and Carol Steele, died following a battle with cancer.
Because his favorite color was royal blue, the Coal Run city hall was illuminated in blue Saturday night.
His full obituary follows:
Joseph Alexander Steele, age 26, of Coal Run Village – Pikeville, Kentucky passed away February 7, 2026 at Pikeville Medical Center following a long illness. Joseph was born March 18, 1999 at Pikeville, Kentucky the son of Joseph Michael and Carol Jane Stewardson Steele. He was preceded in death by, his paternal grandparents, Joe and Emalene Spears Steele, his maternal grandparents, Forrest “Stu” and Dorothy Bentley Stewardson, and a Nephew, Nicholas Hunter Wilson who passed away June 13, 2006.
Mr. Steele was the Senior Video Production Specialist at Pikeville Medical Center, a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, the Mettu Children’s Hospital mascot, Buddy Bear, an Eagle Scout of The Boy Scouts of America, member of the Order of The Arrow, member of the Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity, and former Visual Editor at Eastern Kentucky University newspaper.
Mr. Steele’s survivors include, his parents Joseph Michael and Carol Jane Stewardson Steele of Coal Run Village – Pikeville, Kentucky, his sister and her husband, Melissa Carol and Joshua Wilson of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, his niece, Gabrielle Nichole Wilson, and a host of aunts and uncles and other family members and friends.
The pallbearers are, Josh Wilson, Michael Stewardson, Cole Smallwood, Stephen Vance, Seth Whitt, Christopher Stewardson, Larry Penix, and Mike Younger.
The honorary pallbearers are, Andrew Scott, Danny Walker, the Coal Run Village City Police and The Coal Run Village Volunteer Fire Department.
The visitation begins after 6:00 P.M. Monday February 9, 2026 at J. W. Call and Son Funeral Home and goes until 10:00 P.M.
The Visitation Begins at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday February 10, 2026 and goes until 10:00 P.M.
There will be an evening singing service at 7:00 P.M. Tuesday.
The funeral service will be 1:00 P.M. Wednesday February 11, 2026 with President Tim Caldwell officiating.
Burial will follow at the Steele Family Cemetery located at 5856 Hurricaine Road, Pikeville, Kentucky.
