NORTON, Va. — A Wise County man surrendered to police early Tuesday morning, following a standoff that lasted several hours when they went to question him about a robbery.
Just before 11 p.m. Monday, the Wise County Sheriff’s Office was called to a home on Guest River Road, in Norton, regarding a disturbance involving guns and screaming. A man at the home told deputies he had been robbed at gunpoint and he named 31-year-old Courtland Raymond Gayles as the perpetrator.
When police went to Gayles’ home to ask him about it, he reportedly refused to come outside.
A special response team and negotiators were called in, and after several hours, Gayles surrendered.
He is now being held in the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Duffield on a charge of armed robbery.
