PRESTONSBURG, Ky. — The man accused of murdering three Floyd County law enforcement officers and a police dog will appear in court next month to enter a plea of either guilty or not guilty.

Lance Storz, 49, of Allen, is accused of firing on officers as they approached his home June 30 to arrest him in connection with a domestic violence case, then holding police at bay for several hours while the two sides fired at each other.

Floyd County Sheriff’s Deputy William Petry, Prestonsburg Police Capt. Ralph Frasure, Prestonsburg Police Officer Jacob Chaffins, and Floyd County Sheriff’s K9 Drago were all killed in the incident. Deputy Darrin Lawson, Constable Gary Wolfe and Floyd County Emergency Management Director Joe Reynolds were all wounded.

Under an indictment handed down Monday morning, Storz is charged with three counts of murder of a police officer, six counts of attempted murder of a police officer, seven counts of wanton endangerment, two counts of assault of a police officer, one count of assault of a service animal, and one count of fourth-degree assault.

He appeared in court by video Tuesday morning for a hearing to set the date of his arraignment. That hearing will take place Aug. 1, at 1 p.m.

Floyd Circuit Judge Johnny Ray Harris also ordered that Storz be held without bond until his arraignment.
