Pikeville Police seek public’s help nabbing jewelry thief

PIKEVILLE, Ky. — Pikeville Police are looking for a man who walked away with thousands of dollars’ worth of jewelry on Wednesday, and they have released security camera images to aid in the search.

Police say the man walked into Kay Jewelers in the Pikeville Commons shopping center at 3:47 p.m., Wednesday. He was wearing a black face mask, ball cap with the word “Gram” emblazoned across its front, sunglasses, jeans and a black Nirvana t-shirt.

The man walked to a display case and asked to view an engagement set. After he looked at it briefly, he then asked about something else on the other side of the store. When the clerk asked for the set back, he ignored her and walked out of the store, where his car was waiting with the engine running in the middle of the road.

The entire theft took three minutes, and police say it was “100 percent planned.”

Store employees described the man as possibly being in his 40s. He was described as having brown hair with a substantial amount of gray. He fled in a late-1990s or early-2000s gold or silver car, possibly a Toyota Camry.

Police say they also have video of him inside of Hobby Lobby just a few minutes before he went to the jewelry store, but from there the trail grows cold.

Anyone with information about the suspect or incident is asked to contact Pikeville Police at (606) 437-5111.
