PMC responds to federal price transparency notice

PIKEVILLE, Ky. — When the Trump administration issued warning notices to more than 500 hospitals nationwide regarding federal price transparency requirements, Pikeville Medical Center was among eight Kentucky hospitals to receive one.

However, the hospital says its situation was not the result of missing pricing information or a failure to comply with federal regulations, but instead a technical issue.

PMC says it has maintained publicly accessible pricing information in accordance with federal hospital price transparency requirements and worked with the consulting firm Cleverley and Associates to support compliance efforts. The hospital says the notice stemmed from a technical issue that occurred during PMC’s recent website migration from pikevillehospital.org to pmcky.org.

According to a letter PMC submitted to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the domain transition resulted in a broken link that prevented CMS’s automated system from locating and verifying PMC’s machine readable pricing file, even though the information remained publicly available on the website.

“Pikeville Medical Center is fully committed to price transparency and adheres to all state and federal transparency requirements,” said Michelle Hagy, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. “This was an unfortunate technical website issue, not a lack of compliance, and it was resolved immediately after we received notification. Our pricing information has been and remains publicly accessible at pmcky.org, as required.”

PMC says it quickly identified and corrected the issue, submitted a formal response to CMS within days of receiving the notice, and implemented additional monitoring measures to prevent similar technical issues in the future.
