PRESTONSBURG, Ky. — It took some detective work, but Prestonsburg Police turned a traffic stop into an arrest of two people for a Scott County theft.
Police spotted a U-Haul weaving along Route 114 Wednesday and pulled it over outside of a gas station.
When they spoke to the driver, he told them his wallet was stolen, so he didn’t have a driver’s license on him, and he didn’t have the paperwork for renting the U-Haul, but he gave the officer a name, date of birth and Social Security number. But when the officer ran that information, the picture that came back looked nothing like the driver.
Police found some credit cards with the name Brandon Smith on them, and they learned that Smith was a repeat offender who was wanted in Georgetown for allegedly stealing a U-Haul that morning.
Both Smith, 41, of Georgetown, and his passenger, Regina Chaney, 39, of Shelbiana, were arrested and charged with complicity to receiving stolen property, as well as other charges.
