Police identify drowning victim

PIKEVILLE, Ky. — Kentucky State Police has identified a man who drowned Wednesday after fleeing from a traffic stop and jumping in the river.

Darrel Gooslin

The body of Darrel Gooslin, 51, of Pikeville, was pulled from the Big Sandy River after crews searched for him for several hours.

Police say a state trooper pulled over a car around 11 a.m., Wednesday, near the Long John Silver’s on U.S. 23 South in Pikeville. Once the car was stopped, Gooslin reportedly ran to the riverbank behind the restaurant and jumped in.

Kentucky State Police, Pikeville Police, Pikeville Fire Department, Millard Fire Department, Pike County Emergency Management and the Department of Fish and Wildlife spent hours searching for Gooslin before his body was recovered. Pikeville Fire had its swift water rescue team on the river to lead the search.

Gooslin was free on an unsecured bond awaiting trial in a drug trafficking case, after being arrested back in August.
