A Coal Run Police officer responded to the Daniel Boone Motor Inn around 5:30 Monday evening, after Ryan Jay Cornwell, 45, of Pikeville, reported someone trying to break into his room. The officer found no evidence of a break-in and left, but Cornwell called back an hour later to report someone trying to break into his room again.

This time, police reviewed security footage and saw no one near his room from the time he checked in, so they went to talk to him. During questioning, Cornwell reportedly admitted to smoking meth about four hours earlier.

Then, around 4:30 a.m., Wednesday, Cornwell called Kentucky State Police to report there were two dead people inside his room. That prompted a response from both police and emergency medical services. When they arrived, they found Cornwell sitting outside and no one else inside or outside the room.

Cornwell was placed under arrest on charges of false report which generates an emergency response and public intoxication. The false report charge is a felony, punishable by up to five years in prison.
