Republicans release new House district maps

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Kentucky Republican leaders released their proposal for redrawing House district boundaries on Thursday, and if passed, there will be some impact on Eastern Kentucky.

Most notably, the 93rd District which currently consists of Martin County and part of Pike will leave Eastern Kentucky altogether and instead move to Lexington. Instead, those areas will move into the 97th District, meaning current representatives Norma Kirk-McCormick and Bobby McCool will be forced to run against each other if they wish to keep their jobs.

District boundaries are redrawn every 10 years to reflect census changes, and this is the first time Republicans have had control of the process. Proposals for congressional and state senate districts have not yet been released.

House Republicans say their plan is “compact, contiguous and constitutional.” Democrats counter that the plan is being rushed through and they will be scrutinizing it to make sure it is legal.

The plan is expected to be voted on next week.
