SALYERSVILLE, Ky. — A Lexington man is now facing the possibility of a substantial prison sentence, after police say he came through a roadblock on the Mountain Parkway with a large amount of drugs in his truck.

Kentucky State Police and the Magoffin County Sheriff’s Office were conducting a checkpoint at mile marker 70 on the Mountain Parkway in Magoffin County Thursday night, when Armando Elizondo, 24, came through around 11:15 p.m. Police immediately detected the scent of marijuana when they went to speak to him, so he was directed to pull to the side of the road so they could search his car.

Inside, police found about a pound of marijuana along with nearly an ounce-and-a-half of cocaine. They also found a loaded handgun, despite Elizondo having previously been convicted of meth trafficking in West Virginia.

He was arrested and charged with trafficking in cocaine and marijuana, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, and numerous traffic violations. The cocaine trafficking charge is the most serious, carrying a potential prison sentence of 10-to-20 years.
