PIKEVILLE, Ky. — An Indiana man was arrested in Pikeville, following a hit-and-run crash at Pike Central High School.

The crash happened just before 10 p.m. Tuesday and police found the fleeing vehicle in the median of Hambley Boulevard, near McDonald’s. When police went to check on the vehicle, the driver, identified as James Michael Kaufer, 47, of Memphis, Ind., had to crawl out the passenger side of the car due to extensive damage on the driver’s side.

Kaufer first told police he didn’t know he had hit anybody, but later said he was looking for a place to turn around to go back. He also told police he had been drinking moonshine at a client’s home and he then blew a 0.02 on a breathalyzer.

A reading of 0.02 would not qualify as being considered under the influence of alcohol. However, he was charged with DUI after the officer noted in the police report, “I observed the above subject to have bloodshot eyes, be unsteady on his feet, appear jittery, have body and eyelid tremors, have an alcoholic beverage odor coming from his person, and appear to be manifestly under the influence of an intoxicating substance.”

Police also found anabolic steroids in the car.

He was arrested and charged with DUI, possession of steroids and leaving the scene of an accident.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that Mr. Kaufer registered 0.20 on the breathalyzer, instead of the actual reading of 0.02.
