Strong storms cause damage

ROBINSON CREEK, Ky. — Violent storms moving through Eastern Kentucky last night left a trail of damage.

In Pike County, Emergency Management Director Doug Tackett tells EKB News the storm mostly affected the southern end of the county including Virgie, Robinson Creek, Regina and Jonancy.

There were many reports of downed trees and power lines but the most extensive damage happened at Subway at Robinson Creek. Around 2 o’clock Wednesday morning, the roof of the restaurant detached and landed in the parking lot of the Wildcat Plaza shopping center. No injuries were reported. Maintenance crews at the scene say the restaurant will be closed for at least two weeks, if not longer, while repairs are being made.

Strong winds peaked at 75 miles an hour in Pike County.

Crews with Pike County Emergency Management are out Wednesday in other areas assessing damage.

Doug Tackett adds that two homes in the Regina area also experienced significant damage. One person was treated at a local hospital and released for minor injuries.

The storm also knocked out electricity to 14,000 customers of Kentucky Power. Officials with the company say 80% of Pikeville area customers should have powered restored by midnight, Wednesday, with the remainder restored by 8 o’clock Thursday night.

Whitesburg area residents should have power restored by midnight Thursday, while some Hazard area customers may not have power until Friday.
