Two charged with drug trafficking after chase

Robert Sykes and Megan Akers

PIKEVILLE, Ky. — Two people were arrested on drug trafficking charges, following a short police chase Saturday afternoon.

According to Kentucky State Police, a trooper attempted to stop a car driven by 50-year-old Robert Sykes, but the car continued for several miles before finally stopping. Officers found Sykes to appear to be under the influence, and he allegedly scuffled with officers while they arrested him.

A woman in the car — 36-year-old Megan Akers — told police Sykes wouldn’t let her out of the car and threatened her life if she didn’t hide drugs on her person. She then turned over 9 ounces of what she believed to be meth and heroin.

Both were arrested on drug trafficking and drug possession charges. Sykes is also charged with fleeing police, DUI and other charges.
