RICHMOND, Va. — Recreational marijuana sales are expected to soon be legal just across the state line from Pike County, as the Virginia legislature passed a framework for retail sales on Saturday.
Gov. Abigail Spanbarger has previously said she will sign the bill.
Once signed, the new law will allow anyone 21 or older to buy cannabis from a licensed establishment, beginning Jan. 1. The number of cannabis businesses will be capped at 350.
Legal marijuana sales are expected to generate $400 million in new revenue for the state in the first five years, through a 6 percent cannabis tax on top of the state sales tax.
Local communities will not be able to block sales in their jurisdictions, but can implement a local tax of between 1 and 3.5 percent.
