WISE, Va. — A Virginia man has been sentenced for charges related to a shooting in downtown Big Stone Gap.
Shane Christopher Martin, 32, of Richmond, was arrested for shooting another person in parking lot of the former Economy Drug in November of 2022. He then left the victim there, while he went to the restaurant where he was employed.
Martin pleaded guilty to charges of using a firearm in commission of a felony and aggravated malicious wounding back in January. On Tuesday, a judge sentenced him to a total of 23 years, with nine years suspended, meaning he will spend 14 years in prison.
“We are pleased with the outcome of today’s sentencing in the reckless shooting by a local resident who put the citizens of Big Stone Gap at risk,” Asst. Commonwealth’s Attorney Corey Salyers said. “This careless act by the defendant put not only the victim but multiple other individuals in harm’s way. We are thankful that no additional people were injured in this senseless crime. This type of behavior is not and will not be tolerated in Wise County.”
Martin is currently being held in the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail at Duffield, awaiting assignment to the Virginia prison system.
