New details about Wise County murder case

BIG STONE GAP, Va. — Disturbing new details are emerging from the investigation of a murder in Big Stone Gap last week.

Joshua Blake Smith

Joshua Blake Smith, 31, was arrested last week, on murder and other charges. The Bristol Herald Courier is reporting that the victim in the case is Smith’s 72-year-old grandmother, Charlene Osborne.

The newspaper reports that court records indicate that Smith confessed to strangling his grandmother late Wednesday or early Thursday, then broke her phone so she couldn’t call 911. He then allegedly told police he tried to smother her with a pillow, before stabbing her multiple times in the neck, after which it took hours for her to die.

Afterwards, police say he took her debit card to Walmart to buy a phone and clothing.

Smith is being held without bond in the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail.
