PRESTONSBURG, Ky. — A new motion being filed in the Amber Spradlin murder case appears to lay the groundwork for how the defense plans to fight the murder charge.

Spradlin’s body was found the morning of June 18, 2023, at the home of prominent dentist Michael McKinney. She had been stabbed at least 11 times in the neck and head.
McKinney’s son, M.K. McKinney, is charged with Spradlin’s murder. He, his father and family friend Josh Mullins also face eight counts of evidence tampering for allegedly trying to cover up the murder.
Now, as first reported by WDKY Fox 56 News, M.K. McKinney’s attorney, Steven Romines, is filing a motion to obtain the full polygraph results for Roy Kidd, Spradlin’s friend who went with her to McKinney’s home the night before she was murdered.
In the motion, Romines says Kidd gave “inconsistent and misleading statements” to police the day after the murder, and that a polygraph test conducted on June 28, 2023, only raised more questions.
“In layman’s terms, Kidd ‘failed’ the polygraph as to every questioned asked, including whether he himself stabbed Amber Spradlin,” the motion says.
The motion raises additional questions about Kidd by claiming he was the first person to discover Spradlin’s body, his blood was found at the crime scene, and he was the person M.K. McKinney had called 911 about before the murder because of his “violent and out of control behavior.”
Romines says in his motion that the defense is entitled to the results of the polygraph because Kidd is considered “the essential witness in the prosecution.”
The matter is expected to be argued during a pretrial conference later this month.
