AUXIER, Ky. — A Floyd County man has been arrested on a felony charge of torturing an animal after police say he shot a neighbor’s dog on the neighbor’s property.
Deputies were called to the scene of the shooting on Ford’s Gap Road in Auxier. When they arrived, the neighbor told police that his son was outside with their dog, when Austin Sykes, 19, walked onto their property, said he was going to shoot their dog, then fired a 9 mm handgun twice, hitting the dog once behind its head.
When officers went to talk to Sykes, the police report says he admitted to shooting the dog because he was frustrated that it had destroyed insulation under his trailer. He was then arrested on a single count of torture of a cat or dog.
The police report does not indicate the condition of the dog.
Torture of a dog or cat is a felony punishable by 1-to-5 years in prison.
