PIKEVILLE, Ky. — A baby reported missing on Tuesday has been found safe and her mother is in jail, charged with criminal charges for taking her.
Ashland Police began searching for Kayla Simpson, 27, of Hellier, after she left Karen’s Place Maternity Center with the child.
Karen’s Place is a residential addiction treatment center for pregnant and postpartum women with substance use disorders. Simpson had been ordered to get treatment at the center for six months, in exchange for a suspended sentence after pleading guilty in December to a drug possession charge.
Police say that 2-month-old Mylee was also receiving treatment at the center.
Last month, a probation officer reported that Simpson violated the terms of her probation by using amphetamines, methamphetamine, fentanyl and opiates.
Simpson was arrested Tuesday night by Kentucky State Police. She now faces charges of wanton endangerment and custodial interference.
She is currently being held in the Pike County Detention Center.
