Big Sandy expected to crest below flood stage in Pikeville

PIKEVILLE, Ky. — The National Weather Service has issued a flood advisory for Pikeville until Saturday evening.

At 5 a.m. Friday, the Levisa Fork of the Big Sandy River had risen to just under 23 feet. The river is expected to rise to just below 32 feet Friday evening. The river is not expected to reach flood stage, which is 35 feet, but will be over “action stage.”

According to the NWS, during action stage, “Action is taken for possible high water. Water may cause minor impacts and be a nuisance to persons near the stream. Local governments or agencies may take actions to reduce property damage and danger to life.”

Other cities along the Levisa Fork are expected to see similar conditions, with the river riding to action stage, but cresting below flood stage.
