City, college issue statement about hotel purchase

PIKEVILLE, Ky. — The city of Pikeville and University of Pikeville have resolved their differences over the college’s plan to purchase the Hilton Garden Inn and convert it into student housing.

Last month, the city commission released a statement urging UPike to reconsider the purchase, saying it would have a negative impact on the city’s economy.

But Thursday evening, the city and school released a joint statement, saying that they had met to discuss the matter and have a clearer understanding of the issues.

The city said it will conduct a study to determine if more hotel rooms are needed, but added that current occupancy data indicates the city’s remaining hotels should be able to accommodate current demand.

The statement also said both sides plan to continue working together for the betterment of the community.
