PIKEVILLE, Ky. — A Martin County man has been arrested after police say he stole his ex-girlfriend’s car while she was in the hospital after giving birth to their child.

Pikeville Police were called to Pikeville Medical Center Friday, where the woman was staying. She told them her ex, Christopher Mollette, 37, of Tomahawk, had come to watch the birth of their child. Afterwards, she said she told him he could sit in her car to stay out of the cold, since he couldn’t stay with her due to hospital visitation policies. She later discovered the car was gone and feared he took it.
Police reviewed security video, which they say shows Mollette getting out of the passenger side of the car, getting into the driver’s seat, and driving away.
When the woman spoke to Mollette over the phone and asked him where her car was, she said he told her it was none of her business and hung up on her.
A state trooper found Mollette in Paintsville Saturday night and arrested him. He has now been charged with auto theft and is being held in the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center in Paintsville.
