COLLEGE BASKETBALL: UPIKE women upset No. 9 Shawnee State

The University of Pikeville women’s basketball Bears jumped out to a big first-quarter lead and went on to thrash ninth-ranked and previously unbeaten Shawnee State, 92-74, in a Mid-South Conference battle at Appalachian Wireless Arena on Monday night.

Senior Brianna Burbridge has a big game with 26 points and 14 rebounds. Mary Englert followed with 18 while Morgan Stamper fired in 15 and Alexis Reed tallied 11.

The Bears improved to 6-1 overall while SSU is now 8-1. UPIKE will face another big hurdle Friday at home against Campbellsville University (5-0). Tipoff is 5:30 pm.
