Coronavirus surges to record levels in Kentucky

FRANKFORT, Ky. — The weekend saw a number of ignominious records set in Kentucky’s fight against the coronavirus, including the most new cases of COVID-19 in a week, the most new cases on a Sunday, the most cases ever reported in a single day on Saturday, and on Friday, the most deaths reported in a single day.

Nearly all of Kentucky is now in the red zone, with 103 of the state’s 120 counties seeing critical rates of transmission.

Nearly 8,000 new cases were reported over the weekend, bringing the total to 137,586. Both Friday and Saturday saw more than 3,000 cases reported each day.

Thirty-nine more Kentuckians died over the weekend, raising the death toll to 1,661.

Nearly 1,400 people are currently hospitalized, including 330 in intensive care and 156 on ventilators.

The state’s positivity rate has now climbed to 8.88 percent.
