Driver charged with DUI, assault for crash that left pedestrian with life-threatening injuries

PRESTONSBURG, Ky. — A driver who seriously injured a teenage pedestrian when she hit him with her car over the weekend has been charged with DUI and assault.

Julia Vanderpool, 55, of Prestonsburg, was arrested following the crash, which happened around noon on Saturday.

According to police, Vanderpool was driving along Route 1428, between Prestonsburg and Allen, when she struck Landon Samons, a senior at Floyd Central High School.Samons was airlifted to an area hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries.

The police report says that Vanderpool had drooping, bloodshot eyes and showed slow reflexes when she was interviewed by a state trooper. When asked if she had taken any drugs, she reportedly said that she had only taken her prescribed Xanax and Neurontin.

She subsequently failed a field sobriety test and was arrested for DUI and first-degree assault. The assault charge is a felony, punishable by 10-to-20 years in prison.

Vanderpool will appear in court June 10 for a preliminary hearing and arraignment.
