Justice recommends Mingo project receive $2.7M in funding

The governor of West Virginia has recommended that a recreation project in Mingo County receive nearly $2.7 million in federal funding.

According to a statement released recently by the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection, Gov. Jim Justice has recommended that the Twin Hollow Campgrounds and Cabins Expansion Project in Mingo County receive $2,699,422 in federal grant funding for the development of abandoned mine land sites. The federal Office of Surface Mine Reclamation and Enforcement must give final approval of the projects and amounts awarded, the statement said.

According to the statement, a total of approximately $27.2 million will be utilized for a dozen projects. The amount recommended for the Twin Hollow project is the fourth-greatest out of the 12 projects.

According to the statement, the funding for the Twin Hollow project will be used to expand the Twin Hollow Campgrounds and Cabins Resort “to an even larger, more prominent destination that will bring in thousands of Hatfield-McCoy Trail Riders annually and facilitate a private sector investment of $3,970,230 over the next five years.”

A project in McDowell County which would see the construction of “a housing facility for teachers,” which would also “have space available for commercial use,” was also recommended by Justice to receive $1 million in funding.
