McDOWELL, Ky. — A murder suspect is now in custody, following a manhunt that began late Sunday night in Floyd County.

Michael Colley, 41, was arrested early Monday evening by the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office and Kentucky State Police.

Colley’s arrest stems from an incident just before midnight Sunday, when police discovered a body while responding to a report of a fight at a home on Route 680 at McDowell. The victim has been identified as Patrick Shepherd, 53, of McDowell.

Officers spent Monday scouring the area for Colley, but in the end, he made it easy to find him. Floyd County Sheriff John Hunt said he was patrolling the area searching for him, when he passed by a house where he had been staying and saw him standing on the porch. The sheriff immediately called in backup and Colley was arrested soon thereafter.

Hunt speculated that he had returned to gather some things.

Colley has now been booked in the Floyd County Detention Center on charges of murder and tampering with physical evidence.

He is due in court for a preliminary hearing on Thursday, but he has also been held in contempt of court five times since his arrest, resulting a total sentence of two-and-a-half years in jail.

He is being held on a $5 million cash bond.
