PIKEVILLE, Ky. — A Pike County man who was charged with murder following a shooting earlier this year has now been cleared of the charge.

Monroe Jackson, 57, of Caney Drive, was arrested Sept. 19, after Ryan Hurst was shot and killed in his home.

He was indicted for murder and felon in possession of a firearm last month, but the murder charge was dropped Dec. 13 after it was revealed that a medical examiner’s report had not been presented to a grand jury. A day later, grand jurors had a chance to review the case again with all of the evidence and this time they declined to indict him on the charge.

“Based on all evidence available to us at this time, we do not find sufficient evidence to return an indictment for murder,” the grand jury said in its report.

Jackson still faces the gun charge and remains in the Pike County Detention Center.
