Murder suspect’s attorney asks for additional time to compile list of expert witnesses

PRESTONSBURG, Ky. — An attorney for the man accused of killing Amber Spradlin is asking the court for additional time to line up the experts he intends to call to testify at trial.

Spradlin’s body was found June 18, 2023, at the Arkansas Creek home of Prestonsburg dentist Michael McKinney. McKinney’s son, M.K. McKinney, has been charged with her murder, while both McKinneys and family friend Josh Mullins are charged with multiple counts of evidence tampering for allegedly trying to cover up the crime.

The next hearing in the case is set for July 24 in Pikeville, during which time Special Judge Eddy Coleman has said he wants to go over the expert witnesses each side wishes to call. He has given the attorneys a deadline of July 15 to submit their proposed expert witnesses.

In a motion filed on Wednesday, M.K. McKinney’s attorney, Steven Romines, is asking for an additional month to gather that list of witnesses. As justification, Romines attached a list of 70 pieces of evidence the defense has still not received from prosecutors. He adds that it would be “virtually impossible” to submit a list of experts without first knowing which experts prosecutors intend to use.

There has been no response yet from prosecutors or the judge.
