PHELPS, Ky. — A Pike County man is facing burglary, wanton endangerment, unlawful imprisonment and other charges, after his wife reported him for trying to kill everyone in the house because he believed he had been poisoned.

Ronald Coots, of Phelps, is being held in the Pike County jail. Police were called to his house on Friday, March 13, after his wife reported he was outside with a gun threatening to kill people. She later said she was hiding in the bathroom because he broke a window and got inside the house.

When state troopers arrived, they found Coots on the front porch, holding a shotgun. After convincing him to put down the weapon and talk with police, he reportedly told police his wife was trying to kill him by putting Tylenol in his deviled eggs.

Police noticed he was bleeding heavily from where he broke the window, so they convinced him to walk over to a police car for first aid. Afterwards, they placed him in the police cruiser while they spoke with others in the house.

Witnesses told police Coots broke into the house searching for his wife. Once he learned she was locked in the bathroom, witnesses said he tried to get her to go outside, because he didn’t want to kill her in the house.

Police said there was a blood trail throughout the house from his cut hand, and much of his interaction with his wife was captured on a doorbell camera.

Coots was arrested and taken to the hospital to be stitched up before being taken to the Pike County Detention Center. He is being held without bond.
