New indictment accuses Amber Spradlin defendants of planting fake murder weapon

PRESTONSBURG, Ky. — A Floyd County grand jury has issued a superseding indictment against the three people charged in connection with the death of Amber Spradlin.

Spradlin’s body was found in the Arkansas Creek home of Dr. Michael McKinney on June 18, 2023. She had been stabbed at least 11 times in the head, neck and upper torso.

McKinney’s son, M.K. McKinney, has been charged with her murder. When the initial indictment was handed down, both McKinneys and Josh Mullins were all charged with seven counts of complicity to tamper with physical evidence.

Wednesday afternoon, an eighth charge of evidence tampering was added.

The initial seven counts all had to do with allegations of cleaning up the crime scene, getting rid of the clothes M.K. McKinney was wearing, and destroying video evidence from the home’s security camera system. The new charge alleges the three men planted a different knife in the couch where the murder took place, trying to make it look like it was the murder weapon, when they knew a different knife had been used.

There is no word yet on when the men will appear in court to answer the new charge. A hearing on motions filed in the case has been set for Monday morning.
