IVEL, Ky. — A Pike County man was intercepted by Floyd County sheriff’s deputies on U.S. 23, after he allegedly made threats to take a gun to the VA Clinic in Prestonsburg.

The clinic reported Friday that Robert S. Maynard, 57, of Belfry, had threatened to bring a gun to the facility and shoot people.

Deputies were patrolling U.S. 23 looking for Maynard, when he was spotted at Harold in the passenger seat of a vehicle heading toward Prestonsburg. Additional units were called in and the vehicle was pulled over by Davidson Memorial Gardens, at Ivel.

Once the vehicle was stopped, the driver complied with police commands, but Maynard allegedly told police they would have to kill him. It then took several blasts from a taser to bring Maynard down, and as deputies approached to apprehend him afterwards, he allegedly kicked one in the groin and stomach.

A loaded .38 caliber revolver was later found in the passenger side floorboard.

Maynard reportedly told deputies he intended to take the gun to the clinic and fire it into the ceiling to get the staff’s attention. He has now been charged with felony counts of terroristic threatening and assaulting a police officer, as well as misdemeanor charges of alcohol intoxication and disorderly conduct.
