PIKEVILLE, Ky. — Dr. Ronald Gene McCoy, a retired optometrist from Pikeville, died on Monday at the age of 75.

McCoy practiced in Pikeville for 41 years, also serving as a lifetime member of the Kentucky Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association. 

But in addition to his work, McCoy is remembered for his service and volunteerism to his community, receiving an Honorary Doctorate of Public Service from the University of Pikeville this past May. He played a role in creating the Kentucky College of Optometry at the University of Pikeville and served as a technical faculty member early on.

He was a member of the Pikeville United Methodist Church, a member of the Board of Trustees at the University of Pikeville, a member of the Gideons, a long standing member of the Green Meadows Country Club, a member of the Arnold Palmer Bay Hill Country Club, a former member of the Kentucky Optometrists Association; a dedicated and active volunteer in the local community and served on a mission trip to Peru.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Crum McCoy; daughter, Heather Daniels (Rock) of Lexington; daughter-in-law, Sabrina Murphy (Chuck) of Pikeville; brother, Eddie Arnold McCoy (Lisa) of Phoenix, Ariz.; a sister, Judy McCoy Pafunda; and four grandchildren.

Services will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 12 in the J.W. Call Funeral Home Chapel, with Guy Moyer officiating. Burial will follow in the Annie E. Young Cemetery at Shelbiana.
