PIKEVILLE, Ky. — Pikeville Police used old-fashioned detective work to track down and arrest a man accused of breaking into a gas station early Saturday morning.

It all began just before 2 a.m. Saturday, when a burglar alarm went off at the Extra Mile gas station. When police arrived, they discovered that a drive-thru window had been shattered and a crowbar was lying on the ground under it.

Police reviewed security camera video, which showed a man in a hat and jacket trying to pry the window open with the crowbar, before giving up and smashing it. The man then fled the scene toward a nearby motel.

Police identified the man in the video as Bobby Joe Thacker, 42, of Greasy Creek, and began questioning occupants of the motel to find out if he had been seen. Two anonymous witnesses told police he was staying in room 106, and that’s where police found him, along with the hat and jacket seen in the video.

Thacker was arrested on misdemeanor charges of burglary, possession of burglary tools and criminal mischief.
