PRESTONSBURG, Ky. — An inmate’s craving for a nicotine fix could end up keeping him in jail for several more years.

A guard at the Floyd County Detention Center was doing a routine walk-through last week, when inmate David Chandler, 42, of Paintsville, allegedly came up and told him he would pay the guard $20 if he dropped a cigarette in the floor and walked away.

Instead of doing that, the guard reported it to his supervisor, resulting in Chandler being charged with bribery of a public servant. That charge is a Class C felony, punishable by 5-to-10 years in prison.

Chandler has since been released from jail and is due back in court Dec. 13.
