PRESTONSBURG, Ky. — The man accused of killing Amber Spradlin is appealing a special judge’s denial of his request to lower his bond.

Spradlin’s body was found in the Arkansas Creek home of Dr. Michael McKinney on June 18, 2023. She had been stabbed at least 12 times in the neck and head.
McKinney’s son, M.K. McKinney, has been charged with her murder. He is currently being held on a $5 million full cash bond.
Both McKinneys and family friend Josh Mullins are also charged with eight counts of evidence tampering for allegedly trying to cover up the crime.
At a hearing last month, M.K. McKinney’s attorney, Steven Romines, argued that his client had demonstrated that he is neither a flight risk nor danger to the public during the investigation into Spradlin’s death, which stretched on for more than a year before arrests were made. He asked that his bond be lowered and that the judge allow him to post property or a partial payment.
Special Judge Eddy Coleman denied the request.
On Tuesday, Romines filed a notice in the case, stating his intention to appeal that decision. A copy of the appeal is not yet available.
