Mingo woman accused of keeping dead relative’s Social Security payments

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A Mingo County woman has been indicted, after being accused of keeping Social Security benefits that were being paid to a dead relative for four years.

Diana Cisco is charged with stealing Social Security benefits and lying to investigators.

According to the indictment, the relative began receiving survivor’s benefits in 1992 and later died in 2016. Instead of reporting the death to Social Security, Cisco is accused of keeping the money for herself, until Social Security learned of the mistake in 2020.

The lying charge comes from an episode in March, when investigators attempted to question her about the case, but she told them she was her sister and Diana Cisco would be in Columbus, Ohio, for a month.

Cisco is accused of pocketing more than $46,000 from the scheme.

She has been summoned to the U.S. District Courthouse in Charleston to answer the charges later this week.
