PRESTONSBURG, Ky. — As the investigation into the murder of Amber Spradlin approaches the four-month mark, Floyd County Commonwealth’s Attorney Brent Turner is seeking to reassure the public that the investigation is proceeding and everything that can be done to solve the case is being done.

Spradlin was found stabbed to death at the home of Prestonsburg dentist Dr. Michael McKinney on the morning of June 18. Family members have said she was stabbed at least 11 times in the neck and head.

To date, no arrests have been made and no persons of interest have been publicly named.

Turner said he wants the public to know that the case has not stalled. He said Kentucky State Police is continuing to conduct interviews and follow up on all information they receive. But he said the types of evidence being reviewed and the sheer volume of it requires a lengthy investigation.

“There are a large number of items being tested currently or awaiting forensic testing,” Turner said in a statement to Mountain Top News. “These include trace evidence analysis, DNA testing, as well as blood and fingerprint analysis. They are also analyzing electronic devices including cell phones, computers and video surveillance systems from numerous locations in the state.”

Turner also revealed investigators are receiving federal assistance in the case.

“KSP has consulted with and is receiving assistance from the FBI and Secret Service,” Turner said.

As weeks and months continue to pass without an arrest, the lack of information has fueled the rumor mill, leading to conspiracy theories that the case is being covered up. Turner said he wants the public to know that is most definitely not the case.

“This investigation is the absolute top priority for KSP and for my office,” Turner said. “Everyone is working as hard and as fast as they possibly can to complete the investigation. But it takes time to analyze such large amounts of evidence and it has to be done right.

“There are no second chances in a case like this.”

Turner added that he appreciates the continued assistance and support he and KSP have received from Spradlin’s family.
