UPIKE softball garners five MSC honors

PIKEVILLEFive members of the University of Pikeville softball team were named All Mid-South Conference during the annual banquet held Thursday in Bowling Green.

Catcher Kitty Raymond and outfielders Lee Collier and Jordan Gentry were chosen as first-team players while infielder Chandler Kelly and pitcher Hannah Skaggs earned second-team honors.

Collier was also honored as a gold-glove outfielder.

Players named to the first and second teams were selected by conference coaches, who could not vote for any of their own team members.

The first and second all-conference teams were voted on by the MSC head coaches. They were not allowed to vote for their own players.

Gentry finished fourth in the MSC in hitting at .413, which is a school record, UPIKE’s three other All-MSC selections weren’t far behind as Kelly (.381), Collier (.375) and Raymond (.373) hit eighth, ninth and 10 on the conference leaderboard as well.

The freshman Kelly hit 20 percentage points better than both co-newcomers of the year and tallied two home runs, 37 RBIs, two triples, six doubles and went 7 for 7 on stolen bases. Gentry hit a pair of long balls as well to go along with 24 RBIs, two triples, six doubles and 10 stolen bases.

Collier finished second on the team with three home runs and swiped a program record 21 stolen bases, while Raymond’s 17 doubles are a school record as well.

Skaggs matched a program record with 13 wins as she struck out 94 batters, had a 2,08 ERA and allowed opponents to hit just .254 against her.

Collier was a machine in centerfield, making 99 putouts on 102 chances with just two errors all season for a .980 fielding percentage.

The sixth-seeded Bears take on No. 3-seed Georgetown in the opening round of the MSC Tournament today at Buchanon Park in Bowling Green.
