Virginia reports first coronavirus case in Wise County, but local health district says report is inaccurate

UPDATED: 11:56 a.m. Friday

The Virginia Department of Health reported the first confirmed case of novel coronavirus COVID-19 in Wise County, but local officials are saying the report is inaccurate.

According to the VDH website, Wise County is now showing as having a confirmed case of coronavirus. However, according to its Facebook page, the LENOWISCO Health District, covering Lee and Wise counties and the City of Norton, Virginia, says the case should have been reported as a case out of Winchester, Virginia.

Several southwest Virginia counties have already had confirmed cases. Among those counties are Lee County, with two cases; Tazwell, Smyth and Wythe with two cases each; and Washington County, with three cases.

The LENOWISCO Health District says the reported numbers should be updated by 9 a.m. Saturday.
