WISE, Va. — Wise County’s four-legged officer is getting some added protection.

Roane, a canine officer with the Wise County Sheriff’s Office, has been given a trauma kit from the nonprofit group “Protecting K9 Heroes.” The kits provide first aid and trauma supplies for police dogs and their handlers.

The kits also include Narcan, which the nonprofit says is important to have in the event of an accidental exposure during a drug search.

The trauma kits are lightweight and contained in a backpack, allowing the handler to keep one hand on the leash and the other free for emergencies.

The kits are lightweight and are designed to keep the handler’s arms free to hold the dog’s leash and respond to emergencies.
