
ELKHORN CITY, Ky. – A East Ridge High School student is dead, following a crash Friday morning.
Kentucky State Police Post 9 in Pikeville received a call at 8:33 a.m. reporting a single vehicle collision had occurred on Route 80 in Elkhorn City. A trooper from Post 9 responded and began the investigation.
The initial investigation indicated Zena Newsome, 17, of Elkhorn City, was operating a 2010 Jeep Wrangler on Route 80, when she struck an embankment, causing the vehicle to overturn. Newsome was pronounced dead at scene by the Pike County Coroner’s Office.
Trooper Terry Mounts is investigating the collision and was assisted on scene by Kentucky State Police Post 9 personnel, Elkhorn City Volunteer Fire Department, and Lifeguard Ambulance Service.
East Ridge High School announced on its Facebook page that the start of summer school would be delayed and that counselors would be at the school to talk to students at 10 a.m. A prayer circle is also being planned outside the school at 11 a.m.
