Kansas woman facing felony drug charges after first being arrested while visiting prison

WHEELWRIGHT, Ky. — A Kansas woman is facing criminal charges in Floyd County, after she was allegedly found with contraband outside of the Wheelwright prison, then found with more when she was taken to jail.

Kentucky State Police arrested Valance Naweza, 21, of Kansas City, Kans., after a guard detected the scent of marijuana coming from her vehicle as she approached Southeast State Correctional Complex on Sunday. She was arrested on misdemeanor charges and traffic violations, after the remains of a joint were found in the ashtray and police determined that her license was suspended and her tags were expired.

She was taken to the Floyd County Detention Center, but found even more trouble when she got there, when jail guards found a pack of 148 Suboxone strips while conducting a strip search. Naweza then picked up two felony charges for possession of a controlled substance and promoting contraband.

She has since been released from jail after posting a $5,000 cash bond. She is due back in court Nov. 4.
