PRESTONSBURG, Ky. — After a judge reduced his bond following a court hearing on Monday, the man accused of killing Amber Spradlin has been unable to produce the new bond and his attorney is asking for another reduction.

M.K. McKinney is charged with the murder of Spradlin, who was found stabbed to death in the home of his father, Michael McKinney, on June 18, 2023. Both McKinneys and family friend Josh Mullins are also charged with evidence tampering for allegedly trying to cover up the crime.
Michael McKinney and Mullins were both released on bond and home incarceration shortly after being arrested, but M.K. McKinney has been held on a $5 million cash bond since his arrest on July 30, 2024.
On Monday, after the trial was delayed six months to allow DNA testing of evidence to be completed, Special Judge Eddy Coleman agreed to reduce M.K. McKinney’s bond to 10 percent of $4 million, or $400,000, plus a $1 million property bond.
In Kentucky, property bonds must be secured with unencumbered property worth twice the amount of the bond, or in this case, $2 million. In a motion filed Wednesday, defense attorney Steven Romines says M.K. McKinney does not have the ability to post $2 million in property, but could post property worth $1 million.
Romines requested that the bond be modified once again, to allow M.K. McKinney to post $1 million worth of property and $400,000 in cash, or alternatively to post $500,000 in cash. All other conditions of the bond, including home incarceration, 24-hour monitoring, no contact with Michael McKinney or Mullins, no driving, and no drugs or alcohol with random testing to ensure compliance, would remain in place.
The matter is expected to be argued before Judge Coleman on Dec. 12.
