INEZ, Ky. — A Martin County man who was already on his way to jail, after being arrested for an act of vandalism early Saturday morning, found himself in even more trouble, for allegedly assaulting a state trooper.

William Preece, 57, of Inez, was arrested on misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct, criminal mischief and public intoxication, after Kentucky State Police investigated an incident at the Brookshire Inn on Black Log Road.

Troopers found the word “love” sprayed on the side of the motel, as well as on a car in the parking lot. When officers questioned Preece about it, he allegedly told them he painted the car and building in the name of love.

Once he arrived at the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center in Paintsville, police say he attempted to kick the window out of the police car, wouldn’t cooperate with attempts to take him into the jail, and finally head-butted one of the state troopers. The police report says he told the officer he wanted to knock his hat off.

He was then also charged with third-degree assault of a police officer, a felony punishable by 1-to-5 years in prison.
